Experience of living with a family member with bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is a kind of rigorous disease that has a severe impact over those who are affected and on their families. The central theme of this article is to ascertain in what way does it affects the lives of family with a person having the bipolar disorder. As a matter of fact, this study was conducted using the seventeen family members in the county of south Sweden. The members of the study involved parents, married partners, adult and children having knowledge of a person with this particular disease. The diagnosis of the person affected by this disease was made according to the predefined criteria of DSM-IV. The data was collected between March and October 2005 using qualitative interviews. Additionally, for the purpose of ethical considerations, written permission of the members was taken (Jonson et. al., 2011).

The findings of this study have two domains. The first was the family member's views of the condition of the affected person and their future view. The first part of the findings helped to identify the frustrations which the family members had. The rapid fluctuations of the mood ranging from aggressive to passive made them feel lonely, as in they felt alone and no one can understand them. However, the second part of the findings depicted that the family members were worried about the uncertainty pertaining to what life in the future will be.

Summing up, the bipolar disorder affects the peace as well as security of the family. The uncertainty of moods and the aggressive nature of the person affected enhance the worries of family in terms of their inability to deal with the subject.
