Big data is a term generally used to define extremely large group of 'data sets' that are so big and intricate that it becomes very troublesome to utilize current DBMS (data base management system) tools and conventional applications. However, this does not mean that data sets should necessarily be very large in size in order to qualify as big data. The 'largeness' can be in the complexity of the data and the size can be small for that data set. Big data generally covers four dimensions (Volume, Variety, Velocity and Veracity).
Referring to Volume, Big data includes the constantly increasing amount of data (or information) that reaches volume of up to many Terabytes (TB) or even Petabytes (PB). Big data (in Volume) can help individuals/organizations analyse trends and formulate predictions based on immense data available on the required topic.
The variety aspect of big data refers to any data (structured or unstructured) that is different in nature (or type). It includes data ranging from audio and video files (even live streams) to simple text files (log files, etc). These different types of files are often used together in analysis of data to formulate an accurate result.
Velocity refers to the speed of data sets. Big data falling under this dimension usually involves the handling of time-sensitive data and related processes, where the organization has to make quick decisions based on the data available. Examples include prediction of customer purchases on a daily (or in extreme cases - hourly basis).
Veracity refers to the trustworthiness of the data sets. It is extremely hard to make data sets (Big Data) completely trustworthy to be considered important enough for utilization in analysis or predictions. Normally every 1 out 3 market leaders does not trust information available in big data; this makes it vital to focus on the sources of information.
