Biblical Perspective on Current US Immigration Policies

Introduction

There is an immense increase of immigrants in the United States, particularly illegal immigrants. It is reported that there are 37 million immigrants in the United States out of which 1/3 are undocumented. Even in good times of economic, the extent of illegal immigration phenomenon becomes an issue of great importance.

The issue of immigration stresses fracture between denominational clerics and faithful worshipers. Many Catholic preachers have called for forgiveness for unlawful immigrants and emphasize on open-borders. Catholic Protestant church officials have criticized the enforcement of immigration laws by the federal government. A few liberal religious leaders re-instigate a “sanctuary” movement headed for harbor illegal immigrants.

Conversely, phenomenon of compassion among religious leaders is quite distinct from most rank-and-file Christians. The American principles of faith notify their public and politic policy and have a long historical connection and influence of Christians since earliest days. At present, fourth fifth population of United States is Christian. For instance, the recent prominent examples of belief-influenced politics are religious expression freedom in abortion, public life and same-sex marriage.

On several public policy substances, the Bible has a clear word. However, others lack in clarity and more span for prudential verdict. The rub emerges where there is less scriptural clarity on a particular concern, such as considerable differences between the United States and Testament Israel society (Hoffmeir, 1996).

The teachings of Christianity affirmed that God, His percept and His word are static, although, believers need to make a great effort to uncover the most appropriate direction from Scripture for tackling a specific issue of public policy for their age and day in their realm. This challenge of discovering and applying the precise, eternal principles to a current issue of policy in a particular country challenge both the clerics and laity.

The American Christians responses to immigration policy have been distant and varied. Organizations and leaders of Christianity become more active and vocal on immigration issue, and drawn the attention. These divergences on some issues are profound, the debate of immigrants does not absolutely parallel to a conventional "culture war," which resulted in pitting conservatives against liberals. In fact, there are escalating efforts is being made for widespread immigration reform from across American Christianity theological spectrum.
