I would attempt to defend Norman Bowie's conclusion that the basic ethical principles do not vary among cultures, but only generally for it fails to take into regard the many aspects of culture that define the ethical principles. These if taken into account will nullify his claim.

Discussion

Norman's argument in “Relativism and the Moral Obligations of Multinational Corporations,” constitutes a sound and profound judgment that reflects his deep insight in this subject. Based on Bowie's conclusion, Multinational companies all over the world may be asked to behave in an ethical manner. They need to up hold and support every ethical practice which is upholding human rights. This implies that not only they have to take steps to abstain from abusing their rights, but they also need to practice all the necessary ethical principles that uphold the rights of workers. However, this is merely to be stated generally. When the issue is examined in detail, there appears many different and contrasting notions because overall, through the ethical principles do not vary among cultures, yet cultures do. This difference in culture brings about some change on to the ethical principles even though it is remote and could possibly be not observable.

Take for example the case of the American economy in contrast to the world, especially the Asian states like china. The decade of 1980s till the 1990s was the realization of the global economy by the Americans. The largest impact was evident on the small businesses. This is because when the smaller business firms entered the market, they found many new problems. One major obstacle for them to do business was the different ethical framework they encountered.
