Aviation Management

Abstract

Case Study brief - As an employee at an aviation company, I wanted to implement the tools and techniques I learned in the project management course and apply them for a project for the benefit of the company. The aim of this paper is to develop a project plan for a third party aircraft coming for scheduled maintenance purposes at our MRO facility. This paper will recommend a strategy to help evaluate and plan for the upcoming maintenance work scope, man hours and turnaround time (TAT) and help examine and reduce any risks or limitations associated with the previous preparation for accommodating the aircraft, its arrival, and the time at which the maintenance will take place and finally when the aircraft is released. This will be achieved through certain tools and techniques of project management.

Approach -The proposed strategy to plan and schedule for accommodating this maintenance in place is the use of three combined techniques: MRP (Materials Requirements Planning), PAC (Production Activity Control) and CPM (Critical Path Method) and include them in the current planning system. The benefit of the proposed framework is the delivery of advanced functionalities required for simultaneous and dynamic forward planning of maintenance activities, as well as finite loading of resources, towards optimizing the overall maintenance performance. .

Findings/limitations - Execution of maintenance operations under uncertainty involves too many things that can increase the planned downtime as well as the number of days the aircraft is removed from operation. This includes materials changes, rectification and re-assembly, etc... This can be taken care of by simultaneous and dynamic forward planning of materials and operations with finite loading of resources, using the integrated framework..

Case extent/constraint -in order to adopt the proposed technique, it needs to be accompanied by an appropriate methodology that should be accurately studied for ease of specific context application.

Utilitarian implications -on-time project completion, reduced downtime and overtime costs, and obtainment of a clear time specific maintenance works cope will form the prospective direct benefits of adopting the unitary structuring technique.

Value - Existing approaches to aircraft maintenance planning and scheduling are limited in their capacity to deal with contingencies arising out of inspections carried out during the execution phase of large maintenance projects. The proposed approach is, capable of handling uncertainty associated with condition-based maintenance and findings arising from inspections..

Introduction

Speaking about the airline industry, it is a convoluted and entangled business where any minor fault may result in heavy losses. Airports, airlines and handling operators have to complement each other to provide efficient outcomes. Aircraft maintenance occupies a key position in airline operation because such maintenance is essential to the safety of passengers and the reliability of airline schedules. Each aircraft has its own maintenance requirements which are designed to keep the aircraft in an airworthy condition.

Given the increasing technical sophistication of the asset and the intricacies introduced by different types of aircraft that make up a typical fleet, planning and scheduling of aircraft maintenance can be demanding. The impact of capital equipment downtime, regulatory ...
