CHAPTER 01: INTRODUCTION

Aviation Industry

2003 is also known as the year of 'civil aviation' across the globe and celebrated its 100 years of existence. Though the global aviation industry has seen a black mark with the event of 9/11, this sector is bubbling with lots of potential in promoting economy, basically through trade and tourism. A new approach to this sector has been formulated in terms of ambitious plans, capacity additions, improvement of airport infrastructure and competition, applicable to both domestic and foreign air industry. Certain markets are globally approaching maturity and while others are suffering due to the effects of economic crisis, tremendous potentials exist for aviation market. The need for aviation services continues to grow with the world economy with both the least developed, developing and developed countries to climb the economic development curve.

In the context of Dubai, aviation industry has high potential to grow due to the fact that Dubai is a commercial hub and as well a source of energy. According to Dubai Airport Authority, the International airport is used by more than 105 airline service providers. Many people travel to Dubai especially for job and business. The percentage is high from India. However, when it comes to a common man, affordability is a major constraint if he or she has to bear the cost of travel.

Affordable price for a common man is the critical issue and this will give a boom to the industry. Diversifying the middle class customers to air mode would be only possible on their affordability to the price offered by the industry. Air travel, considered for long a luxury, has been kept out of bounds for average citizen. Despite the introduction of high capacity fuel-efficient aircraft, a major reason for this lies in the very high quantum of taxes and duties levied which accounts for approx 60 per cent of the cost.
