The piece that I worked on was a creative response to the most widely known novel “The catcher in the rye” by J.D. Salinger which got the popularity among the readers all over the world. In the novel the story portrayed the character of Holden Caulfield, who was a protagonist, which presents the conflicting emotions of the teenagers; they receive as they get maturity into their adulthood. The theme of my story emphasizes the constant change in 1950s in New York and presents the idea to enable to cope with change. In the novel, the author used the character to tell his own story in the beginning to bring an introduction to Holden who has delivered his thoughts of the near future. The readers might receive an overriding feeling through this passage as it encompasses the character and personality of Holden, this passage reveals Holden as a conflicted, cynical and angry character at the world.

Now given the fact that the novel was completely targeted towards teenagers as its main audience, J.D. Salinger still used a structure of a classic approach to the readers and while writing this story, I am not sure of placing this story in my list of the classic books like Wuthering Heights or Grapes of Wrath. The story has been challenged by the most opponents which were the reason that it was consistently banned every year since its publication in 1945. Because of the criticism faced at the early times, I found this book to be important to read, and that is the reason, my creative course work is aimed as a more lenient structure, than classical, where my target audience who are again teenagers can grab a better view about the novel.

The sole purpose of my writing is to show that instead of all the criticisms that this novel received, there is a lot more to it than what catches the eye. In the novel the author portrayed the main character of the story, Holden Caufield, as a young guy who was brought to Pency, a prep school. I do not know much about the school, except that the school included most of the wealthy boys who were trained there to prepare for the college and for a successful life.
