ASSESSMENT FOR LEARNING

Assessment for Learning

Abstract

Decoding in reading and the reading disability has been a controversial issue for a long time. The ability to decode is considered a core of reading ability that is learning to decode is tantamount to learning to read. Many researchers have argued that the ability of decoding is at most an epiphenomenon, and that instruction in decoding may distort, if not actually impede, the acquisition of literacy. In this paper, we will be conducting a research to identify the learning disability of a child with proper education to decrease the reading disability. In addition to that, recommendations are also discussed in the paper in order to provide schools and parent a better knowledge as to how they can increase the effectiveness of children.

Assessment for Learning

Introduction

Historically, parents were recognized as their children's primary educator. They were ultimately responsible for their children's education, socialization and upbringing. Prior to the establishment of formal schools and the implementation of compulsory schooling parents were responsible for educating their children at home (Stewart 2001). With the establishment of private schools, mostly operated by religious groups, schooling moved from home to the formalized classroom setting (Harding 2003). While public education is ideally a right of citizens to every society, universal access to schooling is only realized to varying degrees in countries around the world. In many countries, access to education is still denied or limited on the basis of gender, race, economic or social status, or disability.

Education is a right for everyone and a responsibility for parents and teachers to provide children with the best education. This right is spelt out in the education legislation of all states and territories in Australia (Varnham 2008). Education is free and compulsory for all children between certain ages. It is the obligation of parents to make sure that their children are attending school and learning gradually. However, parental choice of education provider is allowed within each jurisdiction by way of state, private or church schools, all of which are registered and regulated to varying degrees by the state.

Extent of Learning Disabilities

Among students at public schools, it is estimated that 5 percent has learning disabilities. While it has long been established that school failure (especially in reading) is common among young people, the possible variance for which learning disabilities may be responsible is yet unknown (Joseph 2003). In the broadest sense, learning disabilities involve a marked and chronic discrepancy between a person's intellect and achievement. Usually, in diagnosing the condition, there will be an attempt to rule out the influence of the following (Cupples 2002):

Poor schooling (if others similarly situated seem to be doing well).

Psychological retardation.

Illnesses that might affect learning.

Poor vision and/or hearing.

Cultural influences.

Economic disadvantages.

The effects of absenteeism.
