Introduction

Article of Confederation was the name given to the first constitution of United States; this one was the first step towards what is formulated today after centuries of the initial efforts. This one was the effort by the government which was conducted as an affair by the country which was in between the last 2 years of the Revolutionary War. This one helped at the time of negotiating the Treaty of Paris in the year 1783. This has produced legislation's two monumental pieces in Land Ordinance of 1785 and also in Northwest Ordinance of the year 1787. On the other hand, the Articles of Confederation was basically a plan of the government which was based on principles fought for in Revolutionary War of the Americans. This one was also the one which contained some of the crucial flaws (Hoffert, 1992).

Weakness of Articles of Confederation

Following are the some of the identified weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation:

Central government is not equipped with the power for levying or collecting the taxes. They are obliged to rely on states for financial support which is done through using annual contributions. This situation is the one which make it really tough to borrow money for the central government.

The congress actually has none power for regulating the commerce and all the states are charged with tariffs and also duties on the goods which are going to come from various other states.

Another thing is that there was no availability of any provision for the chief executive for enforcing the law.

There was also no provision for the national judiciary.

There was no power for the obeying the laws by the legislative branch (Bruce & Yarbrough, n.d.)
