Introduction to the Article

The article “Impact of a Physical Education Teacher's Disability on Elementary Pupils' Perceptions of Effectiveness and Learning” is a research-based writing by Lance G. Bryant and Matthew D. Curtner-Smith. The article assesses the effects of physical education teacher's appearance on the learning effectiveness of the pupils in the class. The text shows that children perceive their teachers in different ways and that the teacher's physical appearance and outlook influences upon their learning abilities. The research conducts using a random sample of 113 (63 females, 50 males) 4th and 5th grade pupils attending three elementary schools in two rural towns, in the southeastern United States. The findings show that the pupils were positively influenced by a handicapped teacher who used a “wheelchair” while delivering the lecture. The process, methods, findings, analysis and results will further be explained by the following questions that present a comprehensive review of the given article and highlights the main concepts of the study. It is a piece of literature that is useful for improving pedagogical practices and students' perception levels.

The major stated purpose of the article is to analyze the effects of a teacher's disability on students' learning effectiveness and the way the students perceive the competence level of their teacher. It assesses how a teacher's appearance and health factors influence upon the students and the impressions that it creates on the students' minds and behaviors. The study relies on a preconceived notion that disabled teachers face difficulty in dealing with the negative perceptions of students and their learning patterns.

Write down your immediate reaction (can be both intellectual and emotional) to the article.

The article appealed to me from many aspects, as soon as I initially went through it. My immediate reaction was appreciative of the theme of the article which has, very precisely, highlighted a unique concept that has the potential to influence pedagogical practices and students' learning patterns to a considerable extent. This area of research reveals valuable insights to the assessment of learning effectiveness through a physical education teacher's disability. If I would have to give my own opinion, it would have been the prejudice that a disabled teacher will have difficulty during the delivery of lectures along with the task of coping up with students' behavior. Students, in my view, tend to disregard or up to a certain extent, disrespect the teacher is he or she is incapable of making acceptable physical gestures and movements while teaching. A teacher on the wheel-chair can have difficulty in moving through the classroom, to keep the students' attention intact.
