Introduction

The paper is designed to portray the role of female identity, sexuality and gender politics under the genre of movie. Maya Deren depicts the mythical and social view of female identity by joining various characters into a communal entity, which continues the movement throughout its scene. Cinema was particularly well suited for Maya Deren, for investigating the universal rules of human life. Maya is famous to contribute her great experimental films, in which three movies are focused in this analysis. The focal point of this paper is to portray the movies; Meshes of the Afternoon, At Land, and Window Water Baby Moving. The Maya's movie Meshes of the Afternoon is immensely subjected to draft the inner world of women which was performed by Maya herself. The movie Window Water Baby Moving is composed by James Stanley Brakhage, in which he reveals the birth of a child.

Backgrounds of Movies

The composition of Meshes of the Afternoon was developed in an environment of wartime instability, which produces its symbolic reflection in its entire mise-en-scène. The setting of film was composed in an LA circumstance, but the nightmare component interested her for its production. The movie demonstrates an atmosphere of great distrust and paranoia with lovers who turn into killers and with the company of a strange but captivating hooded figure. The producer used particular cinematic devices for conveying the insight meaning of it. Specifically, the movie contains great number of scenes which mainly includes when Maya walks up on stairs and every single time, she forces herself against the wall, and the movement of camera triggers her in the way as it is attached to her. When she bulldozes herself over the last stairs, it leads her to the bedroom that totally breaks the expectations of the audience. In this act, the normal senses of space and time completely distracts Maya .This movement of the movie designs no sense that what place is this and how long she will be there. The repeated images In Meshes of the Afternoon are used to provide similar images for triggering memory. The movie is the reflection of this weird estrangement in double, triple, and multiplying of its key character, which was performed by Maya herself. The cyclic storyline and its structure appear to condemn this repetition. The vision of hooded figure and his reflection provides another dimension that ponders the identity in her eyes.

At Land (1944) is another 2nd experimental movie of Maya Deren, which strengthens her interest in side by side anachronistic spaces and also provides a platform for her to introduce critical social rituals. The movie starts by turning the natural beat with images of waves that descend and break back into sea. In this movie, Maya seems to climb over a dead tree trunk on the beach, which mystical emerge her onto the dining table where some part was taking place.
