American Art History

Thesis Statement

The discovery of America in the fifteenth century changed the world view and life of Europeans. With the emergence of several nations including America England, Spain and Portugal took to appropriating the new world, ancient civilizations appeared scattered, with very different ways of thinking, feeling, living, living and dying. All this was incomprehensible and tried to impose own cultures.

Introduction

Historical differences

The difference in attitude was combined with the cultural conditions found in the north: nomadic hunters and agricultural cultures in Mesoamerica complex social institutions.

It appears that the first American works of art have that non-figurative schematic character, extremely simple. This happens in the cave of Clovis where exhumed sandstone plates of different geometric incisions datable to the end of the Pleistocene. A special case is the Patagonian deposits offered by the Paint River valley. There are cave complexes located two major broad chronological periods, with the oldest dates obtained from the eighth millennium BC. C (14 C), however, there is much older archaeological levels up to 14000 years that have been found pigments natural (iron oxide, gypsum crystals, etc.) that had been mixed with other substances, i.e. they had been manipulated by humans.

However, stations Patagonia High River Archaeological Complex paintings deserve some detail. The first, venerable, is the history of art, it is included here as American historiography of American art. The other, of recent birth and much less well defined, the field is called the United States Visual Studies, Visual Culture Studies I preferred to leave these terms in English, though Suite. It appears, at least at first sight, as an extension of historical and critical look at all types of images or "visuality" in general, especially in urban areas and their relationship with text and language. The evolution that we discern both methodological and substantive, is characterized by a certain marginalization of aesthetic judgment before the work or image, in favor of contextualizing and sociological approaches that tend, among other things, to emphasize the political status and role of visual culture and to challenge boundaries and hierarchies, We will first give an overview of recent American historiography of American art, before presenting some salient features at least the American viewpoint studies in Visual Culture.

One of the real challenges of this essay is to question the relevance of such a development for teaching practices and research of American art including civilization depicted with the help of art. In some ways, the popularity of Visual Studies, Cultural Studies like that of which it derives, in part, may seem to validate a trend contextualizing and "interdisciplinary" studies of American civilization, while they do share little or ignore the axiomatic theory and policy which presides. On the other hand, the Visual Culture does not necessarily advance the project, perhaps more convincing, and a history of images.

Some American authors such as John Davis in his remarkable essay synthesis of recent historiography, or American Art in his "social history" of American art (2002), estimate that since ...
