The study is related to almshouses which are charitable housing provided to enable people to live in a particular community. Almshouses are often targeted to poor class of locality, at those from certain forms of previous employment, or their widows and are usually maintained by the trustees of a bequest or a charity.

Almshouses were established in the larger towns of the United States in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to house and minimally sustain the most dependent parts of the population.
