Introduction

The Tows Matrix was implemented with the objective to organize, measure, and communicate the structure of work of the company. The culture is strategically widespread in the divisions, but sought to systematize monitoring of projects and initiatives that effectively impact on the success of the company, as well as disseminating this strategy and translate it into operational terms, communicating to those involved.

The TOWS (Threats, Opportunities, Weaknesses and strengths) matrix is a deviation of SWOT (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threads) analysis. It is a two cell by two cell matrix that helps organizations in determining strategic options by taking external opportunities and threats into account. It also examines about how these external factors can be coupled with companies existing strengths and weaknesses (Hahn, 2011).

Once the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of any organization are identified, TOWS matrix can allow the organization to brainstorm effective strategies to address the outcome of the initial SWOT analysis (Trainer, 2004). This matrix does see the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats which has or may have an organization in its environment. It is vital for a firm to develop it for a better orientation at the time to reflect its objectives and action plans, so that they are as close to the reality of the company. The external factors of an organization have the opportunities and threats to create an attractive prospect, while internal forces and weaknesses creates market competitiveness. More than a quantitative assessment seeks to understand the changes in the environment and measure our ability to compete against best organizations.

Background

TOWS analysis uses the elements of SWOT analysis in a different way and develops the tactics required for developing a successful plan (Weihrich, 1982). One element in the analysis is the Strategic Planning, which, considers the economic, political, social and cultural factors that represent opportunities and threats relating to the external environment of the agency or entity, to their institutional influence. The provision of opportunities and threats building permits allow prospective scenarios of redirecting anticipated scenarios that allow institutional redirect the course, while strengths and weaknesses relate to internal matters of the institution. In the process of strategic planning, the institution must make the analysis of what are the forces counts and what weaknesses that hinder the fulfillment of their objectives strategic.

Usefulness of TOWS matrix:

Strengths/Opportunities: Using strengths in order to capitalize all of the available opportunities from the external environment.

Strength/Threats: Consider all strengths that in the SWOT Analysis with every threat to find out how internal strengths would assist the organization to avoid every external threat.

Weaknesses/Opportunities: organizations can eliminate its weaknesses through capitalizing external opportunities.

Weaknesses/Threats: Avoiding threats and minimizing weaknesses when the company is not in a good position.
