The movie casted Humphrey Bogart as rick Blaine, Ingrid Bergman as Ilsa Lund, Paul Henreid as Victor Laszlo, Peter Lorre as Signor Ugarte, Conrad Veidt as Major Heinrich Strasser and Claude Rains as Capital Louis Renault. The script was very common but its magic spread soon after its release and it captured the business of millions within days. It was called the 2nd greatest movie of the 20th Century.
Basic Plot
Rick Blaine (Bogart is the central character of the movie), a cynical, hard-bitten American who used to operate a popular night club and café in the Moroccan City. The juncture point arrived in the movie when his old lover, Ilsa Lund (Bergman) showed up suddenly in the café. Years back, she left him in Paris without any saying anything when the two of them planned to leave the city due to Nazis entrance. She came there with her husband to look for two letters of transit which would allow them to travel to American safely. In the course, German forces also arrived there to arrest Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), a Czechoslovakian freedom fighter.
Critical Analysis
Ever since Ingrid Bergman walked into Humphrey Bogart's in the movie, the city is considered to be a romantic place somewhere in the thoughts of thousands of Americans who had watched the movie. On the contrary, it is the main port and biggest city of Morocco and for the people of the vicinity; it is just another disagreeable city with large number of people and cars. Although the script tried to capture real conditions during World War II but they didn't succeed completely. The whole movie was shot in Hollywood(Treaster, 1998).
