Abstract

In this study we try to explore the concept of “Death” in a holistic context. The main focus of the research is on “Death” and its relation with “human”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “Death” and tries to gauge its effect on “psychology of humans”. Finally the research describes various factors which are responsible for “the negative or positive sentiments associated with death” and tries to describe the overall effect of “death” on “cognitive patterns, acts and expressions”.

With reference to the poems undertaken for analysis, we shall be covering two main poems that would help us understand how have writers and poets taken such intimidating, yet powerful subjects like love, hate, triumph, defeat, misery, sufferance and the infamous 'death' in ways that can truly moves souls. The impact of Ethos shall be discussed in great detail in terms of making justifications regarding what accounts have been brought forth with reference to context of ethos in the text of literature. Areopagitica itself had been a significant piece of work that had been put forth by Shakespeare to specifically highlight the credibility of speech and credibility that has been put forth for individual readers and for the audience watching it as a play being performed. With reference to this paper, we shall be covering “Death Be Not Proud”, brought forth by Sir John Donne and “Because I could not stop for death” by Emily Dickinson.

The phenomenon of Death

Death is one of the powerful transitions known to man. The phenomenon has no time, no day and no form in which it may occur to take away the human soul and depart a person from the mortal world. Many writers, poets and authors have served day and night in order to understand the phenomenon and also aimed to describe the idea for all others around us. Many mortal souls decipher death as a haunting experience; the loss of their loved ones will ultimately change their lives (Miller, p.309).

Others, on the other hand, have described it as a work of God; one prominent notion associated with death is the 'Grim Reaper', a skeletal figure, holding a scythe in his hand, covered in a black cloak. The Grim Reaper has been given different names in each religion, such as 'Izrael' in Islam and Christianity and 'Yama' in Hinduism. What they must understand is that no matter where we are, where we go or what we do, death will always come to us in ways that we may not imagine. Death has several connotations with reference to religion. Religious scholars, priests and all other religious authorities and bodies mark death as a transition embedded and most necessary by the Lord Himself.
