Abstract

The story “The old man and the sea” is written by one of the famous American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway. The book was written in 1951 and was published in 1952 by Charles Scribner's Sons. It was the author's final work published in his life time. The story is awarded as Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953. The story is based on two aspects, one is about a man and a fish, and other is about a man and nature. The story is about Cuban fisher man and his battle against the big fish. The story shows the bravery, courage, patience, and spirit which gave the inner success to the old man.

Introduction

“The old Man and the Sea” is a famous novel. It is written by Ernest Hemingway. He was an American author and journalist. This book was written in 1951 in Cuba, but it was published in 1952. It was Hemingway's final main work of creative writing, which was published in his life time. A 20th century fiction was greatly influenced by his understated and economical style, while his public image and adventurous life influence the later generations. His most of work was produced between 1920s-1950s. Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. His works include two fiction stories, seven novels and six short stories. His many literature pieces are considered as Classics of American Literature (Grade saver, n.d.).

“The Old Man and the Sea” was one of the most lasting works of Hemingway. The text was written in the language of great control and unfussiness. It is a wonderful story. At one level, it is about the story of a man and a fish, and at another level it is about a man and nature. This story is about an old Cuban fisherman, who was completely down about his luck. Story also contains the old man's battle against marlin far-off in the Gulf Stream. The old man's name is Santiago. This story represents a heroic effort between the old man Santiago and a giant fish. A young boy is his only friend and his name is Manolin. He also lives in the small fishing village near Havanna in Cuba. In this writing, Hemingway mention in noticeably modern style the example of courage against defeat of individual victory won from the victory. Santiago was considered as unlucky. Manolin always used to go for wishing with the old man Santiago until his parents stopped him from doing this. His parents told him that he should not go with the Santiago because he is failing continuously in catching fishing and also he is not earning any money.
