Abstract

Homosexual weddings and gay marriages are being considered or sanctioned by a number of states or countries. This paper tries to explore the issue of gay marriages in a holistic context. The primary focus of this research paper is on the cause and effects of gay marriage. The paper also explains the different perspectives of same sex marriages and tries to measure its impact on the society as a whole. This research paper extend the literature review on gay marriage by assessing straightforwardly the cause and effect of gay marriages and the link amid the enthusiasm for strengthening marriage for heterosexual groups and disagreement towards same sex and gay marriages. The research includes a study incorporating a questionnaire (attached in the appendix of the paper) from 30 respondents who gave different responses that have been assessed in this research paper. Finally, this paper describes the various factors, which are responsible for gay marriages and tries to describe the overall effect of gay and same-sex marriages on the society.

Introduction

Same sex marriage also referred to as Gay marriage is a wed-lock amid two individuals of the same sex. By the year 2010, South Africa, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Spain, Belgium, and The Netherlands had all made, same-sex marriages, legal. The United States Federal government does not acknowledge the same-sex marriages and in the U.S. it is barred by the DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) 1996. All over the country, a total of 5 states have made, same sex marriages, legal. These states include, Washington D.C., Vermont, Massachusetts, Iowa, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Same sex marriages in the state of California got observed amid 16th, June 2008 and 4th, November 2008, subsequent to the Supreme Court of California holding the decrees restraining that wed-locks with couples of the opposite sex were in violation of the constitution of the state; nonetheless, the electorate of California after this granted voter initiatives, which reserved the bar on marrying person of the same sex as part of the constitution of California. Few of the states have acknowledged gay marriages, although do not award the license of same sex marriage, which includes, by the year 2010, Maryland, New York and Rhode Island. As Peter Cane and Joanne Conaghan in their article stated that “Same-sex relationships are……… of many jurisdictions” (Cane & Conaghan, 2008). The movement of obtaining benefits and marriage rights for couples of the same sex in the U.S. started in the start of the 70s decade. The matter turned out to be further important in the politics of the United States in the mid-90s in the midst of a public criticism towards the notion substantiated by the passage of the congress of the DOMA 1996.
