Abstract

The research paper discusses homosexuality and femininity. It proves how femininity serves as the basis of homosexuality referring various theories on homosexuality. The paper discusses, in detail, the concept of homosexuality and femininity as given by Freud. It attempts to solve the riddle of femininity and clear the misconceptions on the psychology of homosexual femininity. It also gives an account of the early medical theories of Philopedia, the concept of Uranians as given by Ulrich who was a Uranian himself, and the reinforcement of the Uranian concept in the theory of sexual psychopathy. By discussing these theories, the paper highlights the origin of the concept of 'a female soul in a male's body'. In addition, it gives the explanation of this concept not only biologically but also psychologically. For this purpose, it gives arguments of both the proponents and opponents of homosexuality with conflicting views of the normal people as well as the defense of the homosexuals. The proponents of homosexuality are people who believe that homosexuality is innate and the sexual conduct of a homosexual is healthy for him. On the other hand, people who are strongly against the homosexuals are those who believe that homosexuality is essentially a psychological disorder which can be dealt with, and the promotion of homosexuality in the name of freedom of speech and as the basic right to live should be condemned.

Introduction

Homosexuality may be defined as the sexual inclination of a person towards members of the same sex. The person may feel affectionate towards and feel a romantic attraction for the same sex person. Sexual orientation in reality is not something that a person has control over or is something that he or she decides by choice. Instead, it is something that is a function of biological factors and to some extent environmental factors. Certain religions have regarded homosexuality as the unforgivable crime on the pretext of homosexuality being dysfunctional behavior. Science, however, does not condemn this sexual behavior in that scientific research reveals that this kind of sexual orientation for a homosexual person is normal (Crozier, p. 447). The psychological problems faced by the homosexuals are not rooted in the homosexuality rather in the reaction of the society towards the homosexuals.

The history of gay life in America is quite old. This history goes back to the Pre World War I when many neighborhoods were formed in the US for the gay. Before the rise of the gay revolution, the US gay population was living a solitary life (Spence, p. 59). For years, the homosexuality in men has been associated with femininity. Back in those days, the word 'gay' did not refer to a sexual preference but a way of life which was marked by dressing up like a girl and speaking like one. The word gay did not mean homosexuality.
