“A Rose for Emily”

Introduction

A Rose for Emily was written by William Faulkner. The story explains the story of an old woman, Emily, who was living in Jefferson Town. The genre of the story is based on the pure Faulkner style. The Rose for Emily is a novel which portrays the decaying of the town of Jefferson, the house in which Miss Emily is living and the crumbling personality of Ms Emily herself.

Overview of the Plot

The story has been divided into 5 chapters. In chapter 1, narrator was recalling the moments of Emily Grierson's demise, and the funeral ceremony at her home, which was attended by the whole town. The house was new to everyone in the funeral, because none of the stranger has ever been into the house. The mayor of the town had exempted Miss Emily from paying taxes keeping the mind the generous act of Mr. Grierson, who had once provided town with funds. As the town administration is changed over the period of time they had made several attempts in order to restore the payments of Ms. Emily. However their efforts had been in vain and there was no success attained in the objective. Once the board members of Aldermen paid her a visit in order to get her payments restored. She asked them to leave the house and also stated that they should be talking to Colonel Sartoris about the tax resumption, which had passed away 10 years ago.

In chapter 2, the narrator explains the event when a strong odor has been coming from the home of Ms. Emily and she was approached by town administration. The complains had been mounting continuously and the people had been continuously forcing the administration to rectify the smell. The judge then sprayed lime around her house which had removed the odor. The scene explains the story 30 years back when Ms. Emily's father had passed away and the person whom she wanted to marry had left her. The people of town had been thinking the Mr. Grierson had been one of the most affluent people of the society thus they have declined several proposals, which they deemed are not fit for Emily. Thus the marriage offers had been reduced with the passage of time and Emily had remained single over the period of time. Emily had not provided her father's body for the funeral for some time, and also refused to accept the death of her father when one of the town lady called her to offer condolence.

The chapter 3 describes the illness of Ms. Emily after the incident of her father's death. The following summer after her father's death, a contractor by the name of Homer Barron has been awarded with the contract of paving and developing the sidewalks. Ms. Emily soon got involved with homer and, he used to take him on rides on his buggy.
