He released his first innovative, When the Lion Feeds, in 1964, in writing while he worked for Salisbury Inland Revenue. The publication profited a movie deal and its achievement boosted him to become a full-time writer. His publisher and subsequent agency, Charles Pick, provided him recommendations he not ever forgot: "Write for yourself, and compose about what you understand best."
