Introduction

This assignment is a literature review on the topic of the prevention of infections with urinary catheters. This is a topic that I have come across in literature and find interesting and during my other placements it has been of great concern to all the medical staff. For this reason I decided to explore the subject further through a literature review. A literature review is an exploration undertaken in both research and evidence based practice.

An indwelling urinary catheter is one that is left in location in the bladder. Indwelling catheters may be required for only a short time, or for a long time. These catheters adhere to a drainage bag to assemble urine. A newer kind of catheter has a valve that can be opened to permit urine to flow out, when needed. An indwelling catheter may be injected into the bladder in two ways:

?                     Most often, the catheter is injected through the urethra, which is the tube that adds urine from the bladder to the out-of-doors of the body(Johnson, 2008, 14-146)

?                     Sometimes, the medical practitioner will inject a tube, called a suprapubic catheter, into your bladder from a little aperture in your belly. This is finished as an outpatient surgery or agency procedure.

An indwelling catheter has a little balloon inflated on the end of it. This stops the catheter from skidding out of the body. When it's essential to eliminate the catheter, the balloon is deflated.
