A holocaust is described as any mass slaughter or reckless destruction of life, and I'm sure you would agree that's what has been happening,” Mr Deller said. First to speak was NSW Legislative Council member Rev Hon Dr Gordon Moyes. He told of being caught smuggling bibles into China and his advocacy efforts for Chinese students in Australia to be given permanent residency after the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. (Christopher 54)
Dr Moyes said that when the first Falun Gong forum in State Parliament was to be held several years ago, the Chinese Embassy called, pressuring them to cancel it. Dr Moyes made sure that didn't happen. “We told the Embassy to shoot off. I have never subsequently been invited to China.” He said he had met Chinese missionaries with scars and tales of torture and beatings, similar to how Falun Gong practitioners are treated today. “In an earlier day it was Christians that went through that,” Mr Moyes said. “My concern is for human rights, whether it's for Christians or Falun Gong people. “China could be the greatest country in the world, but they need to understand that the rights of every single person are inalienable.” (Duke 65)
Tiananmen Square Incident in 1989 and Holocaust
The book foreshadows many of the events that will happen in a communist society. In many ways, the incident of Tiananmen Square in 1989 echoes 1984, which is a warning that totalitarian government is a power abuser, propaganda manipulator, and democracy suppressor.Similarly with the Holocaust: many witnessed it, but years later, many deny it ever happened. The monstrous event that happened on June 4th, 1989 will be forever remembered as one of the most tragic days in human history. (Zhang Orwell 45)However, many decades ago, this event was foreseen and was foretold in the book, 1984, by George Orwell. Orwell saw the rise of totalitarianism, and he was deeply disturbed by what he saw. He believes totalitarianism will be the method that communist party adopts to fight freedom.
As a case study, the coverage of the Holocaust and evolution of the word as it appears in the newspaper the New York Times was studied. This newspaper is good to use because it is a large paper, it has a significant Jewish readership, so the paper is more likely to talk about the Holocaust then other papers whose audience is not as Jewish, and every issue of the newspaper has been indexed digitally starting in 1851 and continuing to this day. (Spence 54) I have also tracked the term in dictionaries published over the past one hundred years to see how the definition of the word has evolved to incorporate the events that took place during World War II. Aside from looking at the word holocaust, other terms that have been used to describe the massacre of the Jews are examined as well. These terms include the Shoah, Churban, and the Final Solution.
There has been scholarly debate regarding the appropriateness of using the term ...
