CHAPTER 02: LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction

Given the great importance that the various health mental disorders account for our country, it is challenging the development and implementation of new therapeutic alternatives consistent with the current integral and bio-psychosocial which deals with the therapeutic level for people with psychiatric.

This paper presents the synthesis of a literature review, both nationally and internationally, on various research works that contribute to sustain the practice of art therapy in the field of mental disorders. Evaluated from the perspective of qualitative case study some of these contributions and reflects on the challenges of art therapy for their expertise in these diseases.

History of mental problems

Mental health problems constitute a major health objective for the decade of 2002-2010 in many countries across the globe. Researchers analyzes changes in the various psychosocial rehabilitation models implemented in the world and concluded that the change in these models involve increased capacity up to the individual, the right to choose their future living environment and the right to assistance and to live in their environment (Hutchinson & Haasen, 2004, pp.355).

A debate has also surfaced on the idea, based on a review of epidemiological studies in the last 20 years of a chronic course of illness. In line with the socio-community approach, which argues that become chronic psychosis is not intrinsic to the disease, is with reference to a natural, humane association with the person diagnosed with mental problems. These are being influenced by different variable, which could be changed and could ultimately help change the current condition and situation of the person associated with mental health issues.

Art Therapy

Art therapy began its development in the art workshops (Sim, Khong and Hulse, 2004, pp.229). From a historical perspective we can recognize that in the 50's and early 60 a set of social and cultural factors came together, opening a way for the development of arts in mental hospitals. In art therapy, the basic objective is going to give importance to personal expression, leaving the classical canons of relevance to a proper form ...
