The research is based on the following research question: “Discuss the effect of smoking on appetite?”

Hypothesis - if appropriate:

Smoking reduces the appetite of an individual.

Rationale:

Smoking has long term as well as the short terms effects including reducing the appetite. Nicotine has been proven to be an appetite suppressant. Nicotine is the main cause of reduction of appetite of an individual. Nicotine has then ingredients that sometime reduce or some time even finishes the desire to take any appetite. Body absorbs around 90% of nicotine through tobacco and this is the main reason of the increase in the amount of nicotine via smoking or cigarette.

Aims and Objectives:

The aim of this paper is to discuss the effect of smoking on appetite. The main cause of decrease in appetite is the heavy consumption of nicotine in the form of smoking and cigarette intake. When nicotine reaches to the brain it disturbs the normal secretion of the hormones. The main task that brain performs is to prepare signals via hormones. Smoking increases the amount of nicotine in the blood which affects brain and disturbs the normal secretion of cetylcholine, adrenaline, beta-endorphin, dopamine, morepinephrine and vasopressin. It reduces the appetite and also affects on the taste buds also. The heavy amount of smoking impact on the taste buds and damages their capabilities resulting individual failed to taste anything good or even bad. The only taste that one can feel is the taste of the smoke of the cigarette.

The nicotine receptor in the brain is composed of 15 subunits, capable of combining various ways to form different receptors with different functions. Nicotine can bind to each combination and induce a cascade of discrete events. Some lead to addiction to cigarettes, others an increase in blood pressure or a feeling of relaxation. It is long known that nicotine causes a decrease in appetite, and scientists thought that this was done receptors associated with reward circuitry and behavior. After all, the brain treats cigarettes and food rewards. But the new study suggests that the appetite has his own way (Saarni 2004).

According to research, people who start smoking when they are in the stress. They feel that it reduces their stress and depression (Palaniappan et.al. 2001). On the other hand, the main negative effect is the decrease in the appetite of the individual. Smoking affects appetite and cause weight loss. Smoking has negative influence on the balancing of the natural energy in the body.

According to the medical perception, the heavy intake of nicotine impact on liver which reduces the desire to take appetite. People do smoking and timely they face the ulcer problems because of the heavy intake of nicotine (Saarni 2004).
