The March 11 earthquake was the longest in the history of Japan. The plant road swelled as a result of the earthquake and units came to a stop for damage checks (Coburn & Spence, 2002). The Boiler Turbine Generator caught fire, and an emergency condition was announced. With limited regulation in place, there was little more that could be done. On March 14, the feedstock supply restarted. However, a consistent shortfall in the supply of chemicals contributed to further complications. In addition, packing machines were not functioning.
