The narrator, Nick Carraway, begins the book with advice from his father that says you should not criticize others. Through Nick's eyes, we meet his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, her aggressive husband, Tom Buchanan and Jordan Baker. Soon we meet Mr. Jay Gatsby, a mysterious rich man who has a huge mansion with Nick and who spends much time in the afternoon looking at a green light across the bay from his garden.
