SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Substance Abuse

`Introduction

Oppression directed at female substance abusers directly reduces the availability of services to promote recovery. Treatment programs are almost all based on methods developed for male substance abusers. Recent experimentation with programs specifically designed for women suggests that higher rates of recovery after treatment can be achieved by offering women programs specifically geared to them. Residential treatment programs are difficult for women with dependent children to participate in because there have been no wide-scale provisions for children while mothers go into treatment. If the children are formally put into placement by the state for the duration of the mother's treatment, it is sometimes difficult or impossible to get them back after treatment has been completed. In general substance abuse is believed to exert a stronger negative effect on the health and social functioning of low-income women and women of color than on non-low-income and white women, because the former groups tend to have more health problems and fewer socioeconomic resources to begin with .

Problem Statement

To determine the effects of substance abuse interventions occuring in women in order to gauge the levels of entry, retention and rehabilitation.

Intensive Case Management Improves Welfare Clients' Rates Of Entry And Retention In Substance Abuse Treatment

The understudy article pertains to the comparison of two approaches; namely Care Coordination and Intensive Case Management. Using both approaches, studies were carried out in order to ascertain the level of effectiveness of each. In this regard, random sampling of women with known characteristics of substance abuse was carried out. The purpose of the study was to present the preliminary findings of the study which was conducted in New Jersey. During outpatient treatment most mothers continue to care for their children who were living with them before treatment. Residential Treatment High costs may limit the widespread development of residential programs for women accompanied by their children. At this time it is very difficult to accurately document the costs of including children in residential treatment with their mothers.

It was noted that the effectiveness of the Intensive Care Management was significantly higher than the Care Coordination approach. The sample size was 146 women who were tested positive for substance use and were randomly assigned to both programs. ICM was significantly more effective than CC in facilitating treatment entry .Differences were especially marked for outpatient treatment. In addition, ICM was significantly more effective in retaining clients in treatment. It is commonly known that people who were involved in substance abuse and have been rehabilitated, are more likely to have better employability.
