This report presents national estimates of the prevalence of diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disability (LD) in U.S. ADHD is associated frequently with other cognitive and psychiatric disorders, including developmental disorders, anxiety and mood disorders, learning disorders, and disruptive behavior disorders. In children identified with ADHD, there is frequent recurrent violation of important rules at home or at school (Reuben & Pastor, 2008). There often is physical violence, lack of close relationships with others, and diminished or markedly reduced conscience. Specific learning disabilities represent a group of conditions that are listed below:
(1) In which performance in psychometric testing in reading, spelling, mathematics, coordination, and other skills is below that which would be predicted on the basis of the child's intelligence,
(2) Second is not explicable in terms of inadequate educational experience. In the case of reading and spelling, the disorder is often called dyslexia (Reuben & Pastor, 2008).
The causes of ADHD are largely unknown. Symptoms include inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and a wide range of other behaviors that make it challenging for children to adapt to school and other social settings.
