Sphinx

The word "Sphinx" perhaps comes from prehistoric Egyptian words for "living image" (Coche, C.Pp-12). Living image means it is still present at Giza. This was seen as a symbol of power, strength and courage. Sphinx is the mythological creature, which amazed people for more than 4000 years. Most famous Sphinx was in Giza named as 'the great Sphinx'. Archeologists have studied that this Sphinx was formed around 2500 B.C by old kingdom “Pharaoh Khafre”, the son and successor of Khufu. He officially claimed the title to Sphinx, “He who inspires great terror” (Regier, W., Pp 08)

The body of Sphinx resembles like a lion and the face was like a king or queen. “Opposite my place of rest, two figures faced each other, large, austere; a couchant Sphinx in shadow to the breast, an angel standing in the moonlight clears” (Regier, W., Pp 15).the quote describes well about the shadow place where Thutmose used to rest. Once he was on hunting and during his hunting, he was tired and decided to asleep in the shadow of the Sphinx. During his sleep he saw a dream that the Sphinx was talking to him and Sphinx told him to clear the sand because Sphinx was in a very chocking situation. The Sphinx also added that if he will do as he said then he would be rewarded with a crown of kingship. Thutmose did what he dreamt about and the Sphinx did what he promised Thutmose.

Who built Sphinx? And how old is Sphinx?

This historic monument's name was given by the Greeks and in was very common in Egypt. As said by the Author, “She is a chimera, half-lion and half-women; half four legged, also and half two-legged, and perhaps partly bird” (Regier, W., Pp 15). Which means that it was a lion shaped monument, they are also known for their royalty and used to be placed at the entrances and tombs to protect the people from evil spirits and enemies. In prehistoric culture of Egypt there were many animals associated with religious significance. Religious significance can be determined by this quote, “Sphinx stands for this world, which afflicts the Christian people with various calamities, but is inspired with fear by the Lord's strength and power. Egypt denotes the addiction which does not release faithful souls without being oppressed by grim toils in that dominion”. (Regier, W., Pp 21), this quote states that the people used to make religious resemblance with monument like Sphinx in old Era. The lion was honored for its strength, courage, and custody. Ancient Egyptians believed that lion gods were the only source of protection and also they were used to protect people at the gates beginning and ending of whole day.
