Problems and Issues in Teaching Speaking Skills

Identify what you consider to be the main problems with teaching a receptive skill or a productive skill and then discuss solutions to these problems with particular reference to your own teaching context.

Today we are living in age of growing competition and communication skills provide people with competitive edge in their careers. There is no doubt that effective communication is prerequisite to success in academics as well as, profession. The communication skills are primary concern for universities and colleges. Same is true for job market, where employers always prefer those with competitive communication skills. There are two broad categories of communication skills, Productive and Receptive Skills. Writing and speaking fall under the category of productive skills while, Reading and listening are categorized as Receptive skills. It is important to keep in mind that all these skills are not learned simultaneously. Listening skills are learned prior to speaking and reading is learned before writing. In other word, development of listening ability helps in attaining effective speaking skills and development of reading help is learning writing. It is said that one's ability to master these skills mostly depends on one degree of motivation (Harmer,2001).

Communication skills are easy to forget if we do not make continuous use of them. It is a simple law of nature, practice makes perfect and lack of practice makes ineffective. People can reach the level of scholars, if they become determine to expert these skills. In order to achieve this, students should make effective use of given opportunities which are provided to them in schools, colleges and universities. Another resource available to students is the research work of early and modern scholars. There are hundreds of books available which guide to develop these skills. The professional field requires people with competitive communication ability and we, teachers are available for helping students. However, the extent to which, student can develop these skill, is dependent on student (Widdowson 1990, pp.1)

Like added students' accomplishment activities, speaking can betoken a lot of of problems as well. In abounding countries acceptance are not asked to do abundant speaking convenance of the ambition accent as allotment of their advance or in the classroom and in some cases no convenance at all. Furthermore, acceptance are aswell charge to accept some hearings of accurate accent getting announced which is generally not the case as there is not abundant time and in abounding cases they are not accomplished by a built-in English apostle but by a being who has the aforementioned aboriginal accent as them. Some acceptance do not like talking as they are abashed of authoritative mistakes and do not feel adequate as they feel their classmates or abecedary ability accomplish fun of them which will accord them low cocky admire (Ur, 1991; 121).
