Young People with Learning Disabilities
Throughout its history, the concept of learning disabilities has been elusive. Initially, research conducted from the late 19th century to mid 20th century served as the catalyst for defining the concept of learning disabilities. The researches conducted have worked from the premise of a relationship between brain injury and impairment of mental functioning (Raymond, 2004). Throughout the years, numerous disciplines and professional groups have been involved in reframing the concept. The term learning disability was initially coined in the early 1960s (Hallahan, Kaufman, & Llyod, 1985). In a study conducted by Hammill (1990), it was noted that among various organizations, such as the National Advisory Committee on Handicapped Children (NACHC), the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities (NJCLD), the Learning Disabilities Association (LDA), and the Interagency Committee on Learning Disabilities (ICLD) all proposed their own definitions of learning disabilities.
