ABSTRACT

Self-managed team is type of team, which consists of individuals who learn all the tasks of all group members, which allows them to share responsibilities. These teams also take over supervisory duties because there is no direct supervision. Recently, SMT have become more popular and will apparently be even more useful in the future. Self management is important area of study to many researchers. It is a new form of idea that became popular in 1950s.It was developed based on the assumptions that participative leadership is the best approach to leading and also that people have a need for autonomy and self-direction.

Research Background

Several authors have defined team in different perspective. Generally, a team is defined as 'a group of two or more individuals who must interact cooperatively and adaptively in pursuit of shared valued objectives. In another perspective team are defined as a small number of people with complementary skill who are committed to common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.

Teams have been generally formed for purpose either in an organisation or schools. In school undergo team formation for assignment, project, which are smaller work group and likewise in organisation as well. Meanwhile, the task design might however be more demanding in the organisation level than school setting; both are born to engage on a mission.

Characteristics of a Team

Teams are basic unit of every organisation.

Teams outperform individuals acting alone especially when performance requires multiple skills.

Teams are created and energized by significant performance challenges.

Teams usually consist of individuals that are united or created for a common purpose and objectives.

Employee turnover has always been one of the challenges to the human resource managers and the respective employers in any fast growing economies. Most of the employers are not aware of why employees choose to leave their organisations and why they stay. Employees who leave the organisation's request as well as those who leave on their own initiative can cause disruptions in operations, work team dynamics and unit performance. Both types of the turnover create costs for the organisation. However, retaining their best employees; managers must make sure their organisations clearly communicate expectations about rewards, working environment and productivity standards and then deliver on the promise.

Research Aims and Objectives

The objective of this research is to examine the relationship self managing teams and employee turnover in an organisation.
