Introduction

Modifying existing behaviors, values, preferences, skills or acquiring new knowledge are known as learning. The process of learning can tend to involve synthesizing various types of information. Some machines, animals and humans possess, the ability to learn. Learning curves can be traced by the progress of learning over time. Personal development, training or education, are some of the major factors that trigger the process of human learning. Learning can be aided by motivation or it can be goal oriented.

Self-directed learning

The learning pattern in which the evaluation, conduct and design of the learning effort relies on the manner and structure in which the individual wishes to learn. Thus, giving it the name self directed learning (Kayes et.al, 2005). Allen Tough, who was a Canadian researcher in the 1960s and 1970s, conducted a study which indicated that self directed learning represents those parts of the adult learning iceberg, which are submerged. Tough predicted that more than eighty percent of self directed learning in adults is comprised of self directed learning efforts. Learners move in and out of learning networks, in addition to consulting a range, of experts and peers in efforts for self directed learning (Kayes et.al, 2005).

These efforts do not occur in isolation, and a theme of research, which is consistent, can be traced. The basic factor on which the self directed learning theory is based on is that decisions about how to learn and what to learn, in addition to the choice of, resources for consultation lie with the learner.
