Non-Technical Skills in Scrub Nursing
Introduction
Nursing is a profession that focuses on the care of individuals, families and communities in order to ensure quick recovery and provide optimal quality of health and care (Kathleen, 2009). Similarly, the importance of scrub nurse cannot be avoided in any surgical setting of a healthcare organisation. The chief task of a nurse is to support wellness through health education of a patient. However, a scrub nurse not just provides a patient care but also works closely with surgeons in the operation theatre to assist surgical procedures. Scrub nurse have expanded their roles and it consists of task such as performing physical examinations, taking patients comprehensive history of health, managing and formulating regimens of care for acute and chronically ill patients, ordering laboratory tests and procedures (Spry, 2005). They usually work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, healthcare personal offices, nursing home facilities and clinics.
Similarly, researchers also believe that if non-technical skills of scrub nurses are enhanced, they could be able to not only perform well but also improve the overall functioning of surgical processes. In fact, it has now become imperative to pay more attention to the issues of poor communication, leadership, problem solving and decision-making skills in order to improve performance of a nurse that works in an operation theatre (Mitchell & Flin, 2008). On the other hand, quality issues of patient care are also vital for the discussion in order to improve scrub nursing and overall healthcare system.
