Abstract

Both school and home socioeconomic status have independent effects upon educational aspirations. It is appropriate to take steps to ensure that schools provide equal opportunity. School uniform policies do appear to represent a solution for some social issues faced by students today. The idea of school uniform policies for public school students is not new. Uniforms help to ameliorate the sense of needing to fit in with one's peers when so many developmental tasks need balancing by the youth of today. Statistical outcomes and differing interpretations of the research are discussed. School uniforms have been shown to directly and indirectly shape the attitudes, identities, and behaviors of students, which, in turn, influence school-related outcomes for the students; however, when uniform policies coincide with the other school reform efforts, it does make it difficult to disentangle the cause and effect.

Also, the school uniform can be a symbol of pride, for example, during sport carnivals and after winning a team race, the students may feel as though they done it for the whole school and not as an individual.

In a financial point of view, school uniform may be sometimes pricey, but it can save money by diminishing the need to buy new clothes. As school uniform could be worn 5 days a week, there is lesser chance of a good argument to buy new trendy and fashionable clothing that may be considered a waste of money.

Finally, in the academic aspect, study shows that children with a compulsory school uniform system excel better than the ones without school uniform. The reason being that the student does not need to focus on their appearance and can focus on their class work and concentrate on learning. This is proven important as the main role of school is to provide a learning ground for students.

On the other hand, some may argue that school uniform is a waste of resources. As quoted from many student, school uniform is a 'gay' and uncool thing to have since they are all like a hay in a haystack. It may give them no opportunity to show their individualism and the chance ...
