The Thesis Statement

James Joyce captures the social realities of early nineteenth century Ireland in the story Evelin. The social dilemma of a young girl he portrays and deal in the story are even faced by modern women in our society of the day. The young girls in the society often feel themselves uncertain about their future. The woman face dilemma between familial obligation and craving for happy life. They are terrified and indecisive; they find themselves poised between past and her future. They have high social hopes and are likely to possess feelings of escape from real life. When they get the opportunity to eschew the gloomy past, burdensome relationships, tortuous routine, and fetters of religion biased towards the dominance of males, then the dilemma asks for a solution and pose a big question for the society.

Socialization and Fear

“There has to be innate circuitry that does the learning that creates the culture, that acquires the culture, and that responds to socialization” (Steven,1999)

The family is the main agent of socialization. Infants are totally dependent on those around them. The family provides protection, love, attention, affection and of course the basic needs such as food and clothing. To young children, the parents represent the whole world around them. The parents teach their children the attitudes and values accepted by the society.
