United Parcel Service (hereinafter referred to “UPS”) was founded August 28, 1907 in Seattle, Washington and now maintains its corporate headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. (UPS Fact Sheet)

According to the United Parcel Service (hereinafter referred to “UPS”) Business Description page on the UPS website, UPS is “the world's largest package delivery company, in terms of revenue and volume, and a global leader in supply chain solutions.” Their international business includes the delivery for 1.8 million shipping customers to 6.1 million consignees in over 200 countries and territories each business day. A daily average of more than 15.8 million packages were delivered each day in the year 2007. UPS offers supply chain solutions to clients in over 180 countries worldwide. In the recent years, UPS has expanded their business capabilities to include the supply chain solutions, although their primary business focus is still time-definite delivery of packages and documents. Supply chain solutions include services such as freight forwarding, customs brokerage, fulfillment, returns, financial transactions, and even repairs.

UPS is also one of the leading providers of “less-than-truckload” transportation services. Beginning on January 2, 2008, UPS introduced the same time-definite delivery system for less-than-truckload (hereinafter referred to as “LTL”) customers. This new system will provide LTL customers with the same guarantee that UPS offers for small package delivery, and if the LTL delivery is not delivered as scheduled, customers may request a waiver of the shipping cost. In order to accomplish this new LTL time delivery guarantee, UPS Freight aggressively implemented and adapted technology to simplify the LTL shipping process for users. Some of the changes that were implemented include: equipping drivers with technology to allow customers to track the shipments from origin to destination; implementing a “Dispatch Reservation System” that increases visibility of orders and drivers to improve on-time pickup and delivery; investing in better equipped trailers to reduce the risk of damage to shipments; enabling Web-based tracking and proactive notification technology which allows customers to more accurately plan for inbound and outbound shipments; and enabling LTL customers to utilize the UPS Billing Solutions software to provide billing data and analysis tools so they can have the full picture of their transportation spending. Other enhancements will also be available in 2008 for UPS LTL shipping ...
