Chapter 1: IntroductionBackground of the Study

Elderly in long-term care often have psychological needs related to aging and life events associated with growing older. Caregivers must be aware that not all issues related to a person's mental health are within the individual's control. There are often physical concerns that affect the brain and direct how people have emotional coping skills. The growing incidence of elder abuse and severe fissures in the multi generational family or household has forced many older persons to abandon their family home; some of them have also been “pushed out” and have thus been left shelter-less (Fischer, 2008). The vision of “alternate shelter” for older persons, as enunciated in both national and global policy frameworks, includes Group housing for older persons, No physical barriers to mobility, Health care and nutritional support, Development of age-integrated communities, Recreation services, Age-friendly, easy and safe accessibility to shopping complexes, community centers, parks and other services, and Provision of ramps and/or Lifts in vertical housing complexes. These issues bring many of the psychological and emotional effects on the elderly.Research Aims and Objectives

The research aims to assess the psychological and emotional effects on the elderly people in the home care.

Significance of the study

The study helps to evaluate the psychological and emotional effects of elderly people in the old age care homes. Research Questions

The following research questions have been formulated for the study: - What are old age care homes?- What are the effects of home care on the lives of the elderly?

Chapter 2: Literature Review

The psychological effects and the process of an individual beginning to consider a move away from independent living and toward some form of supported housing are areas that have attracted increasing interest. Chen et al. (2008) found that the decision of older adults to relocate from independent living to an assisted living facility was a story of weigh the gains and losses. Elders were found to stay at their current residence if gains outweighed losses and to relocate if losses outweighed gains. However, they emphasized that understanding this decision-making process could be an important part of developing future interventions that may promote positive relocation experiences (Chen et al., 2008). This is of particular relevance when we begin to consider the predictive accuracy of such decision making prior to an event occurring. Distal long-range forecasts have typically been found to be relatively inaccurate at predicting outcome. When we also factor in certain personality characteristics (e.g., pessimistic versus optimistic traits), we might further assume that there is a need for further exploration of this decision-making process.
