Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction

The present global managers are continually facing challenges related to external factors which are fuelled by changes in environment. These are often known as “Forces of change” for example: emerging technologies, emerging best business practices, competitive global financial markets, globalization, government regulations, higher worker turnover rates and limited knowledge workers. According to most of the scholars and expert of the subject agree to the fact that the external factor or environmental forces may have triggered the “creative destructive cycle,” the effects of these changes is that many systems are outdated and many firms are forced to created new processes for their businesses (Strauss & El-Ansary , 2008, p.34-68).

Ever since the history of computer, there are new system application software's developed in every era. The examples are as follows: In the year 1950's, transaction processing system was introduced, management information system in the 1960's, decision support systems in the 1970's, knowledge management and executive information systems in the 1980's, and electronic business and commerce systems in the 1990's.

It has been observed that the technological and management paradigm shifts occur very frequently in the current global economy. Due to these global shifts in the economy there are new information system created such as virtual enterprise, business and commerce, web-based database and mobile phones. There has also been new tools discovered related to management for example process innovation; the balanced scorecard; six sigma-total quality management; lean manufacturing; value stream mapping; the delta model and business process reengineering ( McKnight, 2001, p.45-49).

The objective of this research is to analyze the present knowledge management systems (KMS), emerging knowledge management systems (EKMS), the role of information technology (IT), process-based knowledge mapping, the role of managers in the global economy, and famous change management tools (CMT) in the emergence and change of processes.

It explores the majority of business drivers globally and the relationship they have developed with the emerging knowledge management systems that are used by the managers and organizations to be competitive in the new economy of the world. Additionally, it also offers a model of management known as hybrid knowledge for managers globally to: create value- added information; collect and validate data; the seamless transfer of knowledge within the organization; streamline the decision making process, promote organizational learning and memory and encourage storing knowledge in the repository (e.g., web- based data warehouse) that can be accessed every where and any where (Marakas, 2003, p.122-135).

Rationale

In the past five years, the business practices adopted by the global economy have changed significantly due to the development of technology. The implementation of evolving technology into processes of businesses has increased the demand for innovative knowledge management systems. The impact of this paradigm shift has been witnesses on most of the leading industries like automobile. With the revolution in the information systems and the processes related to ...
