Introduction

A wave of democratization is a set of transitions of an undemocratic regime to a democratic, occurring in a given period of time, and that significantly exceed the transitions in the opposite direction during the same period. A wave also involves action liberalization and democratization in political systems that do not become fully democratic.

The Third Wave of Democracy (1974)

The third wave of democratization is a term coined by Samuel P. Huntington, to describe the global trend that has seen more than 60 democratic transitions of the experience of countries since 1974. The third wave of democratization was during the fifteen years following the end of the Portuguese dictatorship. It took place in about thirty countries where authoritarian regimes were deployed by democratic in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

The process of democratization in Africa and the Middle East have achieved limited success in the eighties. Nigeria, returned in 1979 to a democratically elected government, had to undergo five years after a new military coup. In 1990, all some form of liberalization has occurred in Senegal, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt and Jordan. The South African government had begun a slow decline of apartheid in 1978 and had expanded political participation of minorities, not white, but excluding the vast majority of blacks. After a setback, and the election of De Klerk as president, this process was reactivated in 1990 with negotiations between the government and African National Congress. Thrusts Democrats are also manifested in Nepal, Albania and other countries ignorant of any democratic experience. In general, this shift towards democracy has had global dimensions. In fifteen years, the third wave has traveled through southern Europe, Latin America, Asia and decimated the Soviet bloc.
