QUESTION 1 - Basics

Discuss the following: what is a project, what are project management, and the main phases of a project life cycle?

A project is a plan consisting of a set of activities that are interrelated and coordinated. The reason for a project is to achieve specific objectives within the limits imposed by a budget, quality and a previously established time frame previously defined. The project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements. There are 5 phases in a project life cycle, observation, cohesion, differentiation, organization and production stage (David, Gareis, 2006, p. 34-40).

What is a Responsibility Matrix and how would it be used in project management?

Responsibility Matrix is a simple tool. This tool is well suited for capturing and verification of interaction between different parties such as customers and 2 vendors that perform certain work for the customer. To use it to report on planned and ongoing management of the works is not necessary, it contains too much unnecessary information. Types of interactions (artist, inspector, consultant, ETC) are naturally subject to change depending on the specific conditions: for example two types of acceptance can be introduced: financial and technical, or, for example, added the role of "support", therefore, it can be said that this tool can help the decision makers in making important decisions in managing of a project (David, Gareis, 2006, p. 34-40).

QUESTION 2 - Priority Matrix

Identify real life examples of a project that would fit each of the following priority scenarios, support your answer with some explanation:

Time-constrain, Scope-enhance, Cost-accept

Such a situation exists in offices, when employees are asked to complete a task within a specified deadline, causing time constrain. As it is a professional project, the employee needs to enhance the scope of the project, as much as they possibly can. Furthermore, as it is a professional project, the expense of this project is covered by the employer (Witzel, 2003, p. 96-101).

Time-accept, Scope-constrain, Cost-accept

Such a situation might exist in a project where a chemical manufacturing company might want to start packaged food business. In such a case, there would be no constrain related to time, as the organization would want to do a detailed study and research, before starting this business. Scope would be limited to the food industry trends and how to food products to the consumers. Finally, the cost of the project might be high, but an organization can cover up such high costs (Witzel, 2003, p. 96-101).

Such a situation might be found in final year projects of a Bachelors or a Masters Degree program. In such projects, the students are usually faced with time constrains and in this constrain have the scope of their projects is limited, which is accepted. Furthermore, the cost in such projects sometimes is high, for example in engineering program (Witzel, 2003, p. 96-101).
