Thesis Statement

The paper presents a topic on the DNATA cargo services. The purpose of this study is to offer discontinuation of DNATA's delivery services from doorstep to terminal docks. The paper discusses the project management, tools, risk and other details.

Introduction

The issue selected as a topic is the cargo that arrived at Dubai airport took over 24 hours to get to the warehouse which is located within the airport customs bonded facility. DNATA, the ground handling agent at Dubai Airport handles cargo movements, among other tasks, for all airlines except Emirates. (Sky Cargo manages the ground handling for emirates airlines from a separate elite terminal). DNATA is currently operating out of 2 main terminals, one on each side of the runway (Kousholt 2007, 59).

Cargo imported into Dubai is collected by consignees or their nominated freight forwarder/brokers after clearance from customs from their terminal docks. However, DNATA delivers the shipment to warehouses located within the customs bonded area. The volume imported includes commodities like garments, electronics, machinery parts and various raw materials. Freight is usually in cartons and sometimes on pallets (Kousholt 2007, 59).

DNATA Airport Operations, the ground handling agent at the Dubai International Airport and employer of more than 6,500 people, has played a significant and leading role in the development of Dubai International Airport, now ranked as the fourth busiest airport in the world in terms of international passenger traffic and the fifth busiest for international cargo. In Dubai, Dnata Operations Control Centre (DOCC) maintains an overview of all ground handling activities. They also manage emergency and incident situations, (including weather disruptions), should they occur, with minimal disruption to the rest of the airport operations.

Purpose

The purpose of this Project is to discontinue DNATA's door delivery service and set up a process to collect the shipments from the cargo Terminal docks. This will give control over the inflow of cargo to warehouse by planning the quantity as well as the time cargo is delivered to our warehouse. The urgent cargo can be prioritized and utilize the 5 days free storage, which DNATA offers, for shipments that are not urgently required. As part of this project cost reduction would be tried. Currently DNATA have two scheduled trips from Freight gate 5 (located on the other Side of the runway and 2 scheduled trips from FG1 located at the same side of the runway as our warehouse. From the top carriers that we use, AirFrance, KLM, British Airways, Qatar Airways operate out of Freight Gate 1. Cathay Pacific, Singapore airlines, Etihad Airways operate out of Freight Gate 5 (Clifford 2000, 1).
