Planning the Construction of a Single Storey Building

Planning the Construction of a Single Storey Building

Introduction

The primary function of an initial estimation is to predict the probable cost of a future project, before the building has been designed in detail and contract particulars are prepared. These initial cost estimates are the basis for the release of funds for further studies of estimates and become the baseline against which all subsequent estimates are compared. Traditionally, cost estimates are based on the estimator's experience, imaginative abilities and a wide range of assumptions including appraisals of previously conducted projects that are similar in scope (Jarde and Alkass, 2007). Utilizing bills of quantities as a form of cost estimation has been the most suitable estimation method for a number of years. Our productivity also depends on the efficiency and nature of the built environment. The flexibility, mobility and effectiveness of the workforce and the productivity of firms depend on the availability of appropriately configured and located houses and premises. The design, construction and operation of our built environment have other important economic effects, for example, on the rate at which we use resources. Buildings are responsible for almost half of the country's carbon emissions, half of our water consumption, about one third of landfill waste and one quarter 1 of all raw materials used in the economy. Through its impact on the built environment, construction plays a central role in our drive to promote sustainable growth and development.

Residential buildings are called houses/homes, though buildings containing large numbers of separate dwelling units are often called apartment buildings or apartment blocks to differentiate them from the more 'individual' house. Building types may range from one-room wood-framed, masonry, or adobe dwellings to multi-million dollar high-rise buildings able to house thousands of people. Increasing settlement density in buildings (and closer distances between buildings) is usually a response to high ground prices resulting from many people wanting to live close to work or similar attractors.

A multi-story building is a building that has multiple floors above ground in the building.

Multi-story buildings aim to increase the area of the building without increasing the area of the land the building is built on, hence saving land and, in most cases, money (depending on material used and land prices in the area).

Characterstics of the Single Storey Residential Building

The recent design trends in super tall buildings can be summarized as 'three T shapes', which are tapered, tilted and twisted. This research limits design alternative generation to tapered-shaped super tall buildings. One of the features of a tapered-shaped building is that it is somewhat regular in shape. Its shape changes linearly in proportion to the variation of stories. Also, the cost and the schedule change according to the variation of the building's stories when compared with a regular building of similar size.

This regularity has an important meaning for cost and schedule estimation, as many design alternatives can be created by modifying a few variables of trustworthy cases similar in size to the building ...
