Political Conspiracy & Slander

Introduction

Conspiracies, or ?the contract between two or more persons to do an unlawful act, or to do a legal act by unlawful means,? have recurred throughout world history and have shaped and affected governmental activity (Oxford English Dictionary). Catiline's attempt to overthrow the Roman government in 63 BCE was chronicled by Cicero and provided to impact Roman state policies and traditional respect (Pipes, 1997).. The Roman Catholic Church, during the Middle Ages, was involved in the Crusades, which, as some scholars say, marked the beginning of a millennium-long conspiracy to root out Jews and Muslims in the name of Christianity. In addition to the bloodshed motivated by Christianity, the marketing of war activities and damaged policies—which were, to some degree, designed to augment the power and impact of the Roman Catholic Church throughout Europe—were a force behind the Protestant Reformation. During the early years of the leadership of The United Kingdom (1570-1586), agents of the Church suggested at least four murder attempts against the King. There are even those who dispute that the introduction of Christianity was itself a conspiracy theory. With several considerable traditional activities being caused by conspiracies, it should come as no surprise that theories about conspiracies have also informed the world about the governmental policies and activities (Robins & Post, 1997).
