Physical Fitness Testing

Introduction

If aliens from another world landed on planet earth and consulted the professional literature to learn about our education system, it would be quite possible for them to overlook the perspectives of students in the entire process. Eventually, the two groups most closely concerned in the day-to-day function of education, students and teachers, have rarely been asked for their thoughts by researchers. The review of literature in this research paper will focus on research conducted in K-12 schools on student's perspectives, viewpoints, opinions and/or judgments. This is a student-centered approach to research to determine the student's views relative to their experiences of the curriculum. The basic premise of this paper is that researchers can develop more insightful understandings of the teaching and learning environments that exist in middle schools by studying the subjective meanings that are constructed by students in their physical education experiences. The research focus on the mandate of FitnessGram youth fitness program widely used in the United States was established by the underlying objective of improving communication and parental involvement in physical education testing. Teachers can print reports individualized physical activity of children and fitness levels and send them home to parents with recommendations on how to improve. The submission of reports or newsletters is common in many school districts but could be used more widely and more effectively to promote greater parental involvement in physical education. Given the relevance of physical activity to health, the accurate measurement of physical fitness testing is vital as researchers continue to explore relationships between physical activity and health outcomes of the childrens and begin to identify ways to increase physical activity through behavioral interventions (Dyson, 2006).

The hypothesis presents a brief historical perspective or background to student's perspectives relating to physical fitness testing. This is followed by methodological issues in this research, the theoretical underpinnings of student's perspectives, and then by major findings from the research, which include student's perspectives from innovative curriculum in physical education. (Anderson, 2010) The research concludes with the importance of physical fitness testing and comparing 3-groups within an 8th grade athletic female course (basketball, volleyball and training).

Discussion and Analysis

The research was critical of the bulk of educational research carried out at that time. This advocates a redirection towards investigations of what actually occurs in K-12 schools and what norms and values are represented by teachers and their students explicitly and implicitly. ...
