CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Problem Statement
This dissertation will be based upon the completion of a review of the current literature published about the facilitators and barriers, perceived by individuals. In order to acquire such information, articles published in books, peer-reviewed journals, in the media and on reliable internet sites, such as psychology-forum (www.psychology-forum.com), will be sought. I will not be contacting or sending messages to any person on any forums i may use. This search strategy will ensure that a wide-range of sources will be used to provide the basis of knowledge for this study. (Thorne 2000:68) University based search engines and the university library catalogue will also be a tool used to provide access to information sources, which will be assessed according to inclusion and exclusion criteria for their relevance to the study topic. The words for literature search, through university search engines which i may use will be Barriers to exercise, Facilitators to exercise, Barriers and physical activity, Facilitators to physical activity. Journals will also be used for studies and research.
Rationale
To date, there has never been a systematic review of barriers/facilitators associated with participation in physical activity among people with disabilities. Likewise, there is no information available on barriers and facilitators to physical activity participation reported by professionals who work in fields related to physical activity environments that involve structural or program development (i.e., architects, city managers, fitness and recreation professionals). Additional research on personal and environmental barriers and facilitators is needed to build an infrastructure for future program development and appropriate facility and community design that will enhance participation among people with disabilities.
Purpose of the Research
The purpose of this study was to identify barriers and facilitators associated with physical activity participation as perceived by people with disabilities, and professionals who have a direct or indirect influence on accessibility of physical activity and recreation facilities and programs for people with disabilities.
Aims and Objectives
The main aims of the research project are to:
Identify barriers and facilitators to physical activity using online forums.
The study seeks to analyze the barriers and facilitators to physical activity in the adult population.
The main objectives of the research project are to discover:
Conduct a literature review to highlight the different barriers and facilitators to physical activity participation, and to evaluate the effectiveness of strategies which may act to encourage ...
