Abstract

In the ever changing and advancing technology there are new things happening every day. There is a need to understand the software and assess the one that suits your needs. The most common of them all are the operating systems without which it is impossible to function. From computers to cellular devices, all functions on the basis of operating systems. There are a variety of operating systems available in the market and use by different companies like Nokia, Samsung etc.

Other than these there is a variety of software available for other purposes to be use with the help of operating systems. The most commonly used are Microsoft Officer, Microsoft Visio and Adobe. All providing a number of solutions, these solutions are crucial for our business needs and requirements.

Introduction

A set of software that manages hardware and provides general services for programs is called an operating system (OS). In any device, an operating system is a vital component of the system software. An operating system is required for application programs to function. The operating system acts as a mediator between programs and the hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, even though sometimes the application code is directly executed by the hardware and frequently make a system to call an Operating System function or be interrupted by it. Almost every device that contains computer has Operating system that is from web servers and supercomputers to video games consoles and cellular phones (Stallings, 2005).

Time-sharing operating systems are schedule for the different tasks for an efficient use of the system and sometimes these operating systems include accounting for cost allocation of processor mass storage, printing, time and other resources. Some of the examples of popular modern operating systems are BSD, Android, iOS, Mac OS X, Linux, Microsoft Windows, Windows Phone, and IBM z/OS. All these, except Windows and z/OS, share roots in UNIX (Dhotre, 2009).

Windows Phone

A mobile operating system owned by Microsoft is now being used in Windows Phone. According to Microsoft it is a successor to the Windows Mobile platform, however it not compatible with it.
