Comparison of eBay and Other Online Selling Options

Introduction of eBay

eBay, founded in 1995, is the world's largest online marketplace with nearly seven millions goods available for sale each day. With 250 million of registered users around the world, eBay may appear to have a first-mover advantage with significant economies of scale. eBay is headquartered in San Jose, California. In addition to its original website, eBay has many localized websites in other 22 countries (www.eBay.com). Another of the many advantages to selling on eBay is that anyone can do. You do not need to want large, expensive items for sale on eBay. In fact, many of those who sell on eBay are just selling items that take up space in their homes; items they do not want more. If you are interested in becoming an eBay seller, but you do not know how much you can count on eBay for income, you may want to consider testing the waters. When the supplier is greater than demand, you cannot make as much money out of your articles that you had originally hoped for, even if they sell at all. Another disadvantage of selling on eBay is the costs associated with doing so. In recent years, eBay has redone their fee structure, often to increase their fees. Although these fees are still considered relatively low, they could put a damper on your profits, which alone are sometimes hard to find. Of course, there are ways that you can up to eBay fees. Perhaps, the unknown is one of the biggest disadvantages of selling on eBay, you never really know whether you will make money or even if you end up losing money.

Amazon

Amazon.com Auctions, founded in March 1999, have localized websites in Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, France, China and Germany (www.amazon.com). This may be done to attract prospective bidder who usually uses other online auctions sites to Amazon auctions. Similar to eBay, users can leave a feedback to each other after each transaction. However, Amazon.com Auctions uses a five star rating that will affect seller and buyer's reputation.

Yahoo

Yahoo! Auctions, introduced in September 1998, have many localizes website as well in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Taiwan (auctions.yahoo.com). The procedures for selling and bidding are pretty much the same with eBay. Yahoo! Auctions offer feedback features services as ...
