Office Whitening Efficacy with Different Concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide

ETHICAL CONCERNS

Tooth whitening has been one of most appealing and common cosmetic dental treatments in recent years. Dentists, researchers and patients have been looking for faster, more predictable and efficient ways to undergo whitening procedures (Kihn and Peterson, 2000, pp. 1478). Carbamide and Hydrogen Peroxide are the most effective known tooth whitening agents. At the same time the mechanism by which teeth are whitened which are oxidising materials such as Hydrogen and Carbamide Peroxide is currently not fully understood.

This dissertation aims to test the efficacy of office tooth whitening with different concentrations of Hydrogen Peroxide. The dissertation will accomplish the below mentioned objectives.

To undertake a randomized controlled study in the office , to determine whether two in-office Hydrogen Peroxide whitening agents with different concentrations have measurable visual differences for selected individuals with darker teeth shade than C2

To assess effects relapse associated with discontinued use, and tooth sensitivity and gingival irritation associated with whitening treatments.

Ethics refers to the appropriateness of your behavior in relation to the rights of those who become the subject of your work or are affected by it (Matis and Blackman, 1999, pp. 227). It was made sure the research ethics were maintained throughout the research. Intentions of observation and questionnaires were clearly communicated to the people undertaking survey and the questionnaire itself gave a brief message about the purpose of the questionnaire. Privacy of the participants while using observation technique was maintained while conducting the research (Kihn and Peterson, 2000, pp. 1478).

The study will be an analytic, experimental study. It is a Randomized Controlled Study as participants will be randomly allocated to different interventions, then followed and outcomes assessed. Office whitening is one of the most dramatic and the fastest way for whitening teeth. Office whitening uses higher quantities of hydrogen peroxide which increases the sensitivity of the teeth and it then requires the patient to go for more chemical treatments (Hannin and Attin, 2003, pp. 559).

One of the most important aspects of the research regarding tooth whitening is ethical consideration. The entire concept of the ethical; considerations deal with the issues of being fair, moral and decent. Therefore, all the research work must be performed in an ethical; manner. Thus, while conducting this research and designing the literature review, the ethical standards of performing the research will be kept in consideration. The work of other people will also be acknowledged and accredited in accordance with the referencing and citations' rules. The ethical duty of the dentist to respect the patient's right to independent decision making. Ethics requires that the doctor informed the patient about their mistakes, if the errors affect the health of the patient (Machado and Candido, 2007, pp. 111)

For this research study it is important to consider the fact that the experiment doe not cause any harm to the participants of the experiment. The ethical issues are of utmost importance to be considered when a patient is being treated. It is crucial that the treatment that ...
